 PhD in Chemistry is a research-based program in Chemistry where students get an in-depth knowledge of laboratory skills and also these research works will help the students to enhance their knowledge in their respective discipline. Since this program is somewhat related to laboratory activities and experiments, scholars should possess the following skills. The minimum requirement to join the PhD program in Chemistry is a Master’s in Science subject or we can say that Chemistry and its allied subjects.

One who wants to pursue this program should know various areas of Chemistry like Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. The research students can select their specialised areas in chemistry. Some of the specialised subjects are:

Skills Required by the Scholars

Analytical skills: the research scholar should possess the analytical where they should capable to collect, forecasting, analyse the experimental data in an acceptable and organised manner.

Patience: the desired result from research and analysis may take time and cost. So the students should manage their mind with patience till the desired outcome were found out.

Laboratory skills: the PhD in Chemistry will help the students to handle and explore the usage and application of various laboratory equipment and tools. So, the students should develop their laboratory skills to deal with these things properly.

Course Type

PhD in Chemistry is a doctorate program in Chemistry, Here, the scholars can join the program either in a part-time and full-time basis.

Duration of the Course

The minimum period of the course is three and the maximum is five years. But this course duration is probably depending on the research topics and its feasibility of the study.

Eligibility of the Course

  • The students who have qualified their Master’s in Chemistry and its allied subjects with a minimum mark of 55% can apply for the PhD program.
  • M. Phil graduates can also apply for the PhD in Chemistry

Admission Process for PhD in Chemistry

  • Each university has its selection procedures. Some universities may conduct entrance exams and interview round for selecting PhD candidates.
  • The students who have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) OR Junior Research Fellowship can also apply for this program.
  • In addition to these features, the scholars have to prepare a research proposal which should contain the entire outline of the research works.

Syllabus of the Course

PhD program includes a Course work which helps the scholars to understand how the research works carried out. Generally, it will be for six months. The students who have completed the M.Phil. program need not have to attend the entrance examinations and course work.

PhD in Chemistry includes both theory and practical sections. The students have to acquaint with laboratory works and equipment. So, the syllabus should comprise of subjects like scientific communication, general structure, recent trends in Chemistry etc.

Scientists: PhD holders can join various research organisations and can conduct research works on various topics. 

Forensic Chemist: Here, the duty is testing the non-biological evidence from crime scenes and identify the unknown matters present in those samples and thus assist the investigation activities.
