General Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

           General Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national level entrance examination for the admission to Masters in Technology, Master of Engineering and PhD programs in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), National Institutes of Technology (NIT), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT)and other institutes in India.  

GATE is conducted by 8 IITs on a rotation basis under the guidance of National Coordination Board, Department of higher education, Ministry of Human Resources and Development, and the Government of India. 

  • GATE scores will help the candidates to get admissions in Indian Institutes for higher education programs.
  • It also helps the students get financial assistance from government agencies and the Ministry of Human Resources and Development.
  • The syllabus and criteria for General Aptitude Test in Engineering 2021 will be released by the Indian Institute of Bombay.
  • GATE is conducted online for three hours.

Eligibility of General Aptitude Test in Engineering

  • Candidates should possess Graduation in Engineering/Technology (4 years), Architecture (5 years). The final years in this field can also apply for the test.
  • Graduates in Architecture, Postgraduates in any branch of science, Mathematics, Computer Application and Statistics () Engineering/ Technology (5 years) can also apply for GATE.
  • There is no age limit for General Aptitude Test in Engineering

  Questions for General Aptitude Test in Engineering will be selected from the following areas:

  • Verbal Ability: Sentence completion, Word groupings, Critical reasoning, English grammar, and verbal analogies
  • Questions will be regarding engineering topics.

Examination Pattern of General Aptitude Test in Engineering

  • The exam duration is 3 hours.
  • There will be a total of 65 questions.
  • Total marks will be 100
  • GATE comprises of 2 types of questions. They are Multiple Choice Questions and Numerical answer questions
  • Both question types carry 1 or 2 marks
  • Wrong answers will carry negative marks of 1/3.

Instructions for applying General Aptitude Test in Engineering

  • Before applying for the exam, applicants are advised to visit the official website of IITM for understanding the rules and regulations of the General Aptitude Test in Engineering. 
  • Candidates can apply online for GATE by visiting the official website of IIT that conducts the exam in the respective year.
  • At first, the candidates have to register for GATE by entering their name, valid mobile number and email id. After this they have to create a log in password to login to their profile for future reference.
  • After that, they have to enter the communication details, education and personal details.
  • Candidates have to select the GATE paper for which they are appearing and 3 examination centres.
  • Applicants have to upload passport size photograph, signature and relevant document that validate their reservation in the format mentioned by the respective authority.
  • Fee payments are required for General Aptitude Test in Engineering. Fees will vary according to the applicant’s gender and category.
  • Fee can be paid online using Debit card, Credit card and Net Banking.
  • After the successful application, the applicants can take a print out of the confirmation page.
